Lactation Consulting & Breastfeeding

Although breastfeeding is seen as the “natural” way to feed babies, unfortunately for many moms, it doesn’t come so naturally. It is a learned skill and lactation consultants are specifically trained to help moms and babies throughout their breastfeeding journey. Some moms need help with positioning and latch while others require a little more intervention. When babies have tethered oral tissues such as lip, tongue, or buccal ties that are affecting tongue function while breastfeeding, a lactation consultant can help retrain babies to use their tongue, post-release, to achieve optimal function, allowing babies to transfer more milk while minimizing mom’s discomfort.

Without support from our specialists, these functional issues go uncorrected, resulting in babies not getting to experience the wonderful benefits of successful breastfeeding, while potentially limiting proper jaw development. This can lead to further health problems as the child ages, such as misaligned teeth, mouth-breathing, and even sleep apnea.

Lactation consultants provide clinical management and support for breastfeeding and bottle-feeding families.
